How to Fix Candle Tunnelling - and Stop It Coming Back

You light a new candle, leave it half an hour, blow it out. A week later there is a narrow well of melted wax down the centre and a thick rim of untouched wax clinging to the glass. The flame has sunk out of sight. Half of what you paid for is still on the walls.

This is tunnelling, and it is the most common thing that goes wrong with a jar candle. It is also almost entirely preventable.

What candle tunnelling actually is

Wax has a memory. On each burn, a candle melts outward from the wick in a widening pool, and it will only melt as far as it reached the last time. If the first burn stopped short of the edge, every subsequent burn stops in roughly the same place. The unmelted ring gets taller, the flame sits deeper, and eventually the wick drowns in its own well.

People call this wax memory. It is not folklore. It is simply that wax at the edge of the jar is in contact with cool glass and needs sustained heat to reach its melting point. Once a ridge forms, it shades the wall from the flame and the problem compounds.

Why your candle is tunnelling

The first burn was too short. This is the cause nine times out of ten. A candle needs to reach a full melt pool - liquid wax from wick to glass - on its very first lighting. For most jar candles that takes between two and four hours.

The wick is too small for the vessel. A wick that is underpowered for the diameter of the jar will never throw enough heat to reach the edge, no matter how patient you are. This is a manufacturing fault rather than a user error, and it is common in cheap candles and in wide vessels fitted with a single wick.

The candle is in a draught. Moving air pushes the flame to one side. The wax melts unevenly, and you get a pool that is deep on one side and untouched on the other. Air conditioning vents are the usual culprit.

The wick is too long. Counterintuitively, an over-long wick does not help. It produces a tall, flickering, sooty flame that burns fuel fast without spreading heat evenly across the surface.

How to fix a candle that has already tunnelled

The foil method

Wrap a collar of aluminium foil around the top of the jar, folding it inward over the rim so it forms a dome with a gap of two or three centimetres above the flame. The foil reflects heat back down onto the wax ridge. Burn for one to two hours, checking every twenty minutes, and the wall should soften and level out.

This works, and it is the fix most often recommended. Two cautions, though. The foil and the glass both get genuinely hot, so use a heatproof surface and do not leave it unattended. And if the underlying problem is an undersized wick, the foil buys you one level surface and the candle will simply tunnel again on the next burn.

The hairdryer method

For a shallow ridge, a hairdryer on low held a few inches above the surface will melt the top layer enough to redistribute it. Let it pool, then let it set flat before relighting. This is gentler than foil and better suited to a candle that has only just started to tunnel.

Do not use a heat gun. It is too aggressive, and it can crack glass and scorch fragrance oil.

When to stop trying

If the wax ridge is taller than it is wide, or the wick has been swallowed entirely, the candle is not worth rescuing by burning. You can scrape the surplus wax out with a spoon and use it in a wax warmer, which recovers the fragrance even though the wick is gone.

How to prevent tunnelling in the first place

One habit does most of the work: give the first burn as long as it needs. Light the candle - a new Bloom, say - when you have a clear few hours ahead, not fifteen minutes before you leave the house. Wait until the melt pool reaches the glass all the way round. That first pool sets the diameter for the life of the candle.

After that, three smaller habits keep it honest. Trim the wick to about five millimetres before every burn. Keep the candle away from vents, open windows and fans. And burn for at least two hours at a time, but rarely more than four - beyond that the glass overheats and the fragrance starts to cook off rather than lift.

Does soy wax tunnel more than paraffin?

Soy is softer and has a lower melting point than paraffin, which in principle makes a full melt pool easier to reach. In practice soy is less forgiving of a rushed first burn, because it holds its memory more stubbornly and shows an uneven surface more visibly - paraffin tends to self-level a little as it cools.

One note for warm, air-conditioned homes

In the Gulf this is worth saying plainly: the draught problem is worse here than almost anywhere. Homes run cold air constantly, and a candle sitting under a vent or in the path of a split unit will lean and tunnel even with a perfect first burn. Move it a metre out of the airflow and most of the problem disappears.

The heat matters too. A candle stored above about 25C softens, and a softened surface that resets unevenly can start a tunnel before you have lit it a second time. Keep candles out of direct sun and away from windows that take the afternoon.

The short version

  • Tunnelling is caused by a first burn that stopped short of the glass.
  • Fix an existing tunnel with a foil collar for one to two hours, or a hairdryer for a shallow ridge.
  • Prevent it by burning two to four hours the first time, until the pool reaches the edge.
  • Trim the wick to five millimetres, and keep the candle out of moving air.
