How to Make a Gift Hamper at Home: A Dubai Guide

A gift hamper made at home beats a bought one on every count that matters: it costs less, it holds things the person actually wants, and the container is a gift in itself rather than a box that goes in the bin. The method is simple. Choose a basket that will be used afterwards, pick one anchor gift, add two or three small things that go with it, fill the gaps with tissue, and tie it with fabric rather than ribbon.

Gift hampers are enormous in the UAE, for Eid, for housewarmings, for new babies and for the office, and most of them arrive in cellophane with a bottle of something and a lot of filler. This guide is how to make a gift hamper in Dubai that looks considered, using a container you can buy locally and delivery you can rely on.

Step 1: choose a hamper that will outlive the gift

The container decides how the whole hamper feels. A cardboard box says convenience; a woven basket says someone took time. Our woven cotton basket set gives you two options in one: the medium basket for a full hamper, the small one for a compact gift, both in 100% woven cotton with a leather label and handles woven into the sides so nothing sticks out through the wrapping. Afterwards the basket becomes storage for the recipient's shelves, bathroom or nursery, which is the nicest kind of gift: one that keeps being useful.

Choose white and grey for a modern home, white and brown for a warmer one, and if you are unsure, grey suits nearly everyone.

Step 2: pick one anchor gift

Every good gift hamper has a hero, the thing you would give on its own. For the home, a candle is the easiest anchor because it suits any recipient and looks finished in the basket. Nocturne, in frosted blush-pink glass with a bamboo lid, photographs beautifully in a hamper and its black coffee and vanilla scent is warm without being sweet. Golden Hour in amber glass is the choice for a more traditional home, cinnamon and bergamot. Both are 100% soy wax.

For a kitchen-minded recipient, a single canister from a set is an unusual anchor: the sugar canister from the Maison Cream set, cream steel with gold lettering and a bamboo lid, sits in a basket like a small sculpture, and you can give the rest of the set on a later occasion.

Step 3: add the supporting cast

Two or three small items that belong with the anchor. Not more. The classic Dubai gift hamper mistake is filling every gap with something edible until the good gift disappears.

  • With a candle: a box of matches, a bar of dark chocolate, a small tin of tea
  • With a canister: a bag of good coffee or loose-leaf tea to go inside it, and a small wooden scoop
  • For Eid: a box of dates, a dish of pistachios, a small bottle of rose water
  • For a housewarming: a candle, a tea towel in linen, a hand-written list of your favourite places in the neighbourhood
  • For a new baby: the small basket itself becomes nursery storage, so add muslins, a soft toy and a candle for the parents

Step 4: fill, wrap, tie

Line the basket with two sheets of tissue in cream or oatmeal, corners up, so the paper frames the gifts. Put the anchor at the back and the tallest point, the supporting items in front and to the side, and use crumpled tissue underneath to raise anything that sinks. Then either leave the hamper open, which looks best for a hand delivery, or wrap it in a large square of linen tied at the top like a furoshiki. Cellophane is the one thing to avoid; it makes everything inside look like a supermarket display.

Tie with a strip of linen or cotton tape rather than satin ribbon. A sprig of dried lavender, olive or eucalyptus tucked into the knot finishes it.

Gift hamper ideas by occasion

Eid gift hamper

Small basket, Nocturne or Golden Hour, a box of dates, pistachios, and a card. Brass or gold details in the wrapping suit the occasion. Our Eid gift ideas guide has more on what to give and when.

Housewarming gift hamper

Medium basket, a candle, the sugar and tea canisters from the Maison Cream set, and something from the neighbourhood. The basket becomes their first piece of storage. See our housewarming gift ideas.

Gift hamper for Mum

Small basket, Quiet Hours lavender candle in its ceramic vessel, a bar of chocolate, tissue and a linen bow. Our Mother's Day gift guide covers the rest.

Luxury gift hamper

Go bigger on the anchor, not the filler: two candles instead of one, a full canister set in the medium basket, tissue and linen. Luxury reads as restraint, not volume.

What a home-made gift hamper costs in Dubai

  • Small hamper: small basket plus one candle, from about AED 210
  • Medium hamper: medium basket, a candle and a canister, from about AED 260
  • Full hamper: basket set, two candles and a canister set, around AED 460, which clears the AED 375 threshold for free standard delivery

Everything above ships across the UAE in one to three business days, with same-day delivery in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Ajman for orders before midday.

Gift hamper questions

What do you put in a gift hamper?

One anchor gift, two or three small things that go with it, tissue to fill the gaps, and a card. Stop before it looks full.

What is a good container for a gift hamper?

A basket the recipient will use afterwards. Woven cotton is soft, light to carry and looks finished without wrapping, and it goes straight onto a shelf when the gifts are unpacked.

Can I buy a ready-made gift hamper in Dubai?

Yes, but a home-made one costs less and shows more care. If you are short on time, order the basket and candle to your own address, assemble it in ten minutes, and hand-deliver.

How do I wrap a gift hamper without cellophane?

Leave it open with tissue, or wrap the whole basket in a square of linen tied at the top. Both look better and both are reusable. For more on giving well, read The Considered Gift.
