This is a short, practical guide to buying well. Not the longest burn time or the loudest scent, but the candle you will actually want to light on an ordinary Tuesday evening.
Why scent behaves differently in a Dubai home
Two things shape how a candle performs in the Emirates, and neither of them is the fragrance itself.
The first is heat. Warmth lifts fragrance and carries it further, which means a candle bought here will almost always throw stronger than the same candle in a cooler climate. A scent described as bold can become overwhelming in a closed room. This is why restraint tends to serve you better than intensity.
The second is moving air. Most homes here run air conditioning for much of the year, and a vent above a shelf will pull fragrance away as quickly as the candle releases it. It also makes the flame flicker, which causes uneven burning and a wick that drifts to one side.
The simplest fix
Keep a lit candle away from direct airflow. Not across the room, just out of the draught. A side table, a low shelf, the far end of a console. You will use less wax, get a cleaner burn, and the scent will hold in the room instead of being carried off.
Why soy wax suits a warm climate
Soy wax has a lower melting point than paraffin. In practice that means it releases fragrance at a gentler temperature, so the scent unfolds slowly rather than arriving all at once. In a warm home, that gentleness is an advantage.
It also burns more slowly, which is the quiet reason soy candles tend to last longer than their size suggests. A 12oz soy candle, burned properly, will outlive a paraffin candle of the same weight.

Choosing a scent, room by room
The most common mistake is buying a scent you loved in a shop and putting it in the wrong room. Fragrance is spatial. Match it to what the room is for.
- Living room and majlis. Warm and grounding. Something with spice or wood that holds its own when people are talking and moving. Our Golden Hour candle in Cinnamon & Bergamot was made for this room.

What actually makes a candle worth the money
Price tells you very little. These four things tell you more.
The wax. Look for 100 percent natural soy, or at least a clearly stated blend. Vagueness is usually hiding something.
The wick. A single wick suits a narrow vessel. A wide vessel needs two, or it will tunnel and waste half the wax.
The vessel. Ask whether you would keep it once the wax is gone. A good vessel has a second life as a holder for rings, cotton buds or small everyday things. Our ceramic flower candles were designed to be kept.
Honest sizing. Weight in grams or ounces, stated plainly. Approximately 12oz for a room candle, approximately 120g for a bedside one.
Living with a candle in an air conditioned home
Three habits make more difference than anything else.
Trim the wick to five millimetres before every light. An untrimmed wick smokes, and smoke marks the glass.
On the very first burn, let the wax melt all the way to the edge before you put it out. Soy wax has a memory. If you extinguish it early the first time, it will tunnel down the middle for the rest of its life.
Burn for no more than four hours at a time. Longer overheats the vessel and dulls the fragrance rather than strengthening it.
A note on buying locally
Candles do not enjoy long journeys in heat. Soy wax can soften and lose its finish in a warm delivery van, which is one practical argument for buying from a UAE seller who ships locally rather than importing from overseas.
