Most home decor advice is written for other cities. It assumes soft northern light, walls you are allowed to drill into, and seasons. Decorating a home in Dubai is a different exercise: the light is hard and white for most of the day, the majority of us are renting, the floors are marble or porcelain rather than timber, and everything gathers a fine layer of dust between cleans. Decor that works here has to answer those conditions, not fight them.
Start with what the light does
Dubai sunlight flattens cool greys and makes stark white interiors feel clinical rather than crisp. Warm neutrals do the opposite: cream, sand, oatmeal and soft brown absorb the glare and turn it golden. If you change nothing else, swap cool-toned accessories for warm ones and let sheer curtains break the midday sun. By late afternoon the same room will light itself better than any lamp.
Decorate for a rental, without it looking like one
The renter's instinct is to keep things temporary and bare. The better approach is to decorate with objects rather than installations - things that sit on surfaces and move out when you do:
- Woven baskets soften hard floors and give loose things a home. A set of two in cotton rope does more for a living room corner than most furniture.
- Canisters and bread bins turn the kitchen counter - the most visible surface in an open-plan apartment - into a composed still life. A matching set in powder-coated steel reads as decor while doing real work.
- Candles with presence. A sculptural candle is decor even unlit. Frosted glass and a bamboo lid keep it looking considered on the shelf; our design candles are made to be looked at as much as burned.
- Trays and linen gather small objects into intentional groups instead of scatter.
The three-object rule for shelves
Open shelving stays calm when each shelf holds one group of three: something tall (a canister, a vase), something soft (a small basket, folded linen) and something with a life of its own (a candle, a bowl you actually use). More than that and the shelf becomes storage; less and it becomes a display case. Group in odd numbers, keep one material in common, and leave a hand's width of empty shelf either side - the negative space is the luxury.
Scent is decor too
A home that smells warm reads as more finished than one that merely looks it. In a city where windows stay shut half the year, scent needs managing like lighting: something soft and ambery for evenings, something green or citrus for daytime. Buy less, but heavier
Dubai makes it easy to fill a flat in one weekend - a mall trip, a delivery van, done. The homes that feel expensive are rarely the most filled ones; they are the ones where every object would be missed if it left. A useful test before anything joins your home: would you pack it when you move? If the answer is no, it is clutter with a receipt. Fewer, better objects also survive trend cycles - warm neutrals, natural materials and honest steel have not dated in twenty years of interiors and will not date in the next twenty.
