Most advice about candle scent assumes the candle is fine and the room is the problem. Often it is the other way round: the candle spent three months on a sunlit shelf and lost its top notes before anyone lit it.
Storage is the least interesting part of owning candles and the part that decides how much of what you paid for you actually get.
What heat does
Fragrance oil is held in suspension in the wax. It is volatile by design - that is the whole point, it needs to evaporate when warmed. The difficulty is that it does not distinguish between a flame and a warm room.
Above roughly 25C, a soy candle begins losing fragrance while sitting still. Not dramatically, but continuously. A candle stored at 30C for a summer can arrive at its first lighting noticeably weaker than the same candle kept in a cupboard.
Heat also softens the surface. Soy has a low melting point, and a jar that softens and re-sets repeatedly develops an uneven surface, sometimes with the beads of separated oil covered in Why Is My Candle Smoking, Sweating or Leaving Soot?
In this region that is not a hypothetical. A candle on a windowsill behind glass can sit well above ambient for hours a day.
What light does
UV breaks down both dye and fragrance compounds. A coloured candle fades unevenly - the side facing the window goes first, which is why a candle can look two-tone. Citrus and floral notes degrade fastest; vanilla, wood and resin hold up better.
Frosted and coloured glass gives some protection, which is a genuine functional advantage of an opaque vessel over clear glass, not only an aesthetic one.
Where to actually keep them
Cool, dark, dry. An interior cupboard, a drawer, a shelf away from the window. The same conditions that suit dry goods, for much the same reason.
Not a windowsill, however good it looks. Not near the oven, a radiator or above the kettle. Not in a bathroom that steams daily - humidity encourages the wick to absorb moisture, which makes it hard to light and burn cleanly. Not in a car, even briefly; a parked car here reaches temperatures that will visibly slump a soy candle.
Upright, always. A candle stored on its side that gets warm enough to soften will set with the wick off-centre, and an off-centre wick burns unevenly for the rest of its life.
The lid is not decorative
This is the part most people miss. The lid's job is to slow evaporation between burns.
An open candle sitting on a shelf is losing fragrance every day, whether or not it is lit. A lidded one loses far less. Over months, that is the difference between a candle that still smells like itself halfway down and one that has flattened into its base notes.
Put the lid on once the candle is completely cool - never on a warm candle, which traps moisture and condenses it onto the wax surface.
How to make a candle smell stronger
If a candle seems weak, work through these in order before concluding it is a bad candle.
Check the melt pool. Scent comes off the surface area of liquid wax. A candle that has tunnelled has a fraction of the surface it should, and will smell like a fraction of the candle. This is by far the most common cause. See How to Fix Candle Tunnelling.
Give it longer. A room takes twenty to thirty minutes to fill. People often judge a candle within five.
Turn off the air conditioning near it. Cold, dry, moving air suppresses throw more than almost anything. The same candle in a still room is a different candle. This is the single biggest environmental factor in a Gulf home, covered further in Scented Candles in Dubai.
Close the doors. Scent dissipates into every connected space. An open-plan room needs either a larger candle or two.
Trim the wick. Counterintuitive, but a long wick makes a bigger flame, not more fragrance - it burns fuel faster and produces soot instead of throw.
Consider your nose. Olfactory adaptation is real: you stop registering a scent you have been sitting in for twenty minutes. Everyone entering the room still smells it. This is why people burn a second candle and guests find the room overwhelming.
Long-term storage
If you are keeping candles for a while - stock, gifts, or seasonal scents put away:
- Lids on, upright, in their boxes if you have them.
- Interior cupboard rather than an exterior wall, which runs warmer.
- Do not stack heavy things on soy candles; the surface takes an impression.
- Use within one to two years for soy. It does not spoil, it fades. More on that in How Long Does a Candle Actually Last?
The short version
- Under 25C, out of direct light, upright, lid on.
- Never a windowsill, a car, or above a heat source.
- Weak scent is usually a tunnelled melt pool or moving air, not a weak candle.
- Give a room half an hour before judging.
Ours - Bloom and Nocturne among them - come with a bamboo lid for the reason above, and in frosted rather than clear glass, which shields the fragrance from light. The four scents are in the candle collection.
