Christmas Decoration Ideas for an Apartment: Light, Green and Not Much Else

Cream apartment living room dressed for Christmas: a lit amber glass soy candle on an oak console beside eucalyptus in a jug and brass baubles, a woven cotton basket holding a knit throw on the floor and a small potted fir behind

Decorate a small apartment for Christmas with light before things: lamps and one spiced soy candle instead of the ceiling light, fresh eucalyptus or fir in a jug, one shelf dressed with three objects, a small potted tree rather than a large one, and a table with two candles and a low bowl. It costs under AED 100 and packs away in a single basket.

Christmas decoration ideas for an apartment come with a problem the magazines never mention: you live in a rental, it is twenty-eight degrees outside, and you have nowhere to store a two-metre tree in January. The good news is that the nicest Christmas homes are not the fullest ones. They are warm, a bit green, lit low, and they smell right. This guide is Christmas decoration ideas for Dubai and UAE apartments that look calm rather than crowded, cost very little, and pack away into one basket when it is over.

Start with light, not with things

The single change that makes a room feel like December is lower, warmer light. Turn off the ceiling light. Put a lamp on, and light a candle or two. A room with three warm points of light and nothing else on the walls looks more festive than a room with a lit tree under a bright downlight. Our guide to the hour before evening is really about this one habit.

For the candle, choose a scent that says the season without shouting it. The Golden Hour candle, cinnamon and bergamot in amber frosted glass, is the one we reach for from late November. It is warm and spiced but it is not a bakery. Light it an hour before people arrive and put the lid on when they leave.

Green, in small amounts

A bunch of eucalyptus in a jug on the console. A few stems of fir from the supermarket in a stoneware vase. A single garland along one shelf, not every shelf. Fresh green against cream walls is the whole look, and it costs about AED 40. Skip the artificial garlands with the built-in lights; they read as plastic from across the room.

The tree question in a small apartment

You do not need a full tree. A small potted fir on a side table, a metre high at most, does the job and can go on the balcony after. If you do want a tree, choose a slim one and dress it in one colour of ornament, matte rather than glossy, and warm white lights rather than multicoloured. A tree with fifteen matching ornaments looks more expensive than one with eighty mixed ones.

Christmas decoration ideas for the living room

  • One shelf, decorated. Clear the shelf completely, then put back three things: a candle, a small bowl of baubles, a sprig of green. Our guide to the composed shelf explains why three works and seven does not.
  • Throws in a basket. Christmas is the one season Dubai apartments get to use blankets. Keep two folded in a woven cotton basket by the sofa and the room looks softer without a single ornament.
  • Coffee table, three objects. Candle, bowl, book. Our coffee table decor guide has the rule.

Christmas decoration ideas for the dining table

A linen runner, two lidded candles down the centre, a low bowl of pomegranates or clementines, and cloth napkins. That is a Christmas table. Tall centrepieces stop people talking to each other; keep everything below chin height. Our guide to dining table decor ideas goes into the layout.

Christmas decoration ideas for a rental

Nothing that needs a nail. Garlands drape over the top of a door frame or along a shelf. Lights tuck behind a plant or run along a windowsill. Wreaths hang on a ribbon from an over-door hook. Everything on this list comes down in an hour and leaves no mark on the wall, which matters when the deposit is on the line.

The scent of Christmas at home

Real pine if you have it, and a candle that is spiced but not sweet. Two candles in different scents in the same room fight each other, so choose one for the living room and one for the bedroom. Golden Hour in the living room; the Nocturne candle, black coffee and vanilla, later in the evening. Our guide to making your home smell good covers how to layer without overdoing it.

Packing it away in January

This is where most Christmas decoration goes wrong. Ornaments in a shoebox at the back of a cupboard, lights in a knot. Instead, keep everything in one lidded box or one basket, wrap the baubles in the tissue they came in, and coil the lights around a piece of cardboard. A medium woven basket holds a small apartment's worth of Christmas and looks fine on a wardrobe shelf all year. Our guide to closet organisation has the shelf plan.

Christmas decoration questions

How do you decorate a small apartment for Christmas?

Lower the light, add green in one or two places, dress one shelf and the dining table, and choose a small potted tree over a large one. Warm candlelight does more than any ornament.

What is the cheapest way to decorate for Christmas?

Fresh eucalyptus or fir from the supermarket, a candle you already own, and warm white lights along one surface. Under AED 100 for a whole living room.

How do you make a home smell like Christmas?

Fresh pine if you have a real tree, and one spiced soy candle such as cinnamon and bergamot, lit for an hour before the evening starts. Avoid sprays and plug-ins.

When should you put up Christmas decorations in Dubai?

Most homes here decorate in the last week of November or the first weekend of December, and take everything down in the first week of January. Our Christmas gift guide for Dubai covers the rest of the season.
