A frosted glass candle is ideal because it looks finished whether it is lit or not. Something low
A shallow bowl, a small lidded box, or a dish that holds the things that would otherwise scatter: matches, a lighter, the remote you actually use. Low objects anchor the tray and give the tall object something to stand against.
Something living
One stem of olive or eucalyptus in a glass, a small dish of dates, a bowl of fruit. Living things make a table look used rather than staged, and they change with the week, which keeps the arrangement from going stale.
Why the tray matters
A coffee table decor tray does two jobs. It groups three separate objects into one shape, so the eye reads calm instead of scatter, and it makes the whole arrangement liftable in one movement when you need the table for dinner, a laptop or a board game. Brass, wood, and rattan all work; pick the one that matches the other metals and woods in the room. Keep the tray to roughly a third of the table's surface.
Round coffee table decor
Round tables want a round tray and a single cluster in the middle, never a line. Stagger the heights so the arrangement looks good from every seat: tall at the back from the sofa's point of view, low at the front, the stem leaning slightly toward the window.
Modern coffee table decor for long, rectangular tables
A long table can take the tray at one end and a single book or a second candle at the other, with the middle left clear. Resist filling it. The empty stretch is what makes a modern living room look expensive.
Ramadan coffee table decor
During the holy month the coffee table becomes the iftar table for dates, water and conversation, so the arrangement should shift with it. Swap the stem for a bowl of dates on the tray, add a second candle so the evening light comes from the table rather than the ceiling, and keep the rest bare so there is room for glasses. Coffee table decor with books
Books are the easiest tall object, but two rules apply. Stack no more than three, and choose covers that agree with the room's palette: cream, sand, black, one colour at most. A stack of bright spines is decor for a bookshop, not a living room. Put the low object on top of the stack to tie the group together.
Where the candle goes and how to burn it
The tall object is nearly always a candle, so it is worth getting the burn right. Light it when you sit down for the evening and let the first burn reach the edge of the glass, which stops tunnelling later. Trim the wick to about five millimetres before each burn, keep it away from the edge of the tray where a sleeve could catch it, and never leave it lit when you leave the room.
